Why Flexible Jewelry Is Changing Luxury Design: PICCHIOTTI’s Xpandable™ Solve Age-Old Jewelry Issues

Why Flexible Jewelry Is Changing Luxury Design: PICCHIOTTI’s Xpandable™ Solve Age-Old Jewelry Issues

In this fast-paced world, luxury design must be flexible to complement our ever more hectic contemporary lifestyles. Fine jewelry is often very quickly added just before heading out the door. Jewelry that is difficult to put on or does not fit perfectly often ends up being left behind in the jewelry box. Luxury today is all about comfort and ease. At PICCHIOTTI, these two values are a driving force behind their best-selling Xpandable™️ collection. Expandable or flexible jewelry that is easy to put on and comfortable to wear is changing luxury design. The design team at PICCHIOTTI started a global revolution with the xpandable. No clasp bracelets and rings that do not need to be sized are welcome additions to any jewelry wardrobe. Here, we will trace the origins and see how the design aesthetic has evolved over the years.

How it All Began – PICCHIOTTI Solves AgeOld Jewelry Problems

PICCHIOTTI Xpandable solve the problems of ring sizing and cumbersome clasps.

Giuseppe Picchiotti, founder and lead designer of PICCHIOTTI, has been designing and handcrafting jewelry in his workshop since 1967. He has toured the world meeting face to face with customers across the globe. “I have been lucky enough to design and create high jewelry for over six decades now,” says Giuseppe. “And the only thing I love more than making a woman feel beautiful is solving problems! For years, I heard clients around the world lament that they could not wear their beloved rings because they would not fit over their knuckles or their bridal rings no longer fit them at all. Or, they would complain that they could not wear their bracelets because the clasp was too difficult to manage by themselves.” These issues perplexed the award-winning designer for years. He felt a strong calling to try to solve the issues to make rings and bracelets more comfortable and to make buying them easier.

“At our PICCHIOTTI atelier in Valenza, I worked for years with my design team until we finally discovered the perfect solution… our Xpandable™️ technology!” continued Giuseppe. “I believe it is one of the greatest jewelry inventions of all time. We have literally solved the problem of ring sizing. These rings can expand up to 2.5 sizes – they can grow with you throughout your lifetime and easily slide over knuckles that may get bigger over time.

“We also solved the problem of cumbersome clasps.  These bracelets gently slide on and off the wrist.  In addition, we have freed women from the complaint that the jewelry just sits in the safe! Our xpandable are luxury jewels designed to be worn EVERY day.”

Since the very founding of the brand in 1967, PICCHIOTTI has been pursuing excellence. At the heart of this legacy is the extraordinary Xpandable™️ technology. The dual benefits of both comfort and ease make them essential for contemporary lifestyles. Luxury in the modern world is all about sophistication and exclusivity balanced with a reduction in stress from the exceedingly rapid pace of the digital world. xpandable have expertly achieved this delicate balance with the elegance of superlative gems and exceptional design, paired with technology that allows for comfortable wear without the hassles of ring-sizing and difficult clasps.

The proprietary mechanism gently stretches and contracts, and it always snaps back into place. The technology is completely invisible, allowing rings to gently glide over your knuckles and to grow WITH you throughout your life. Xpandable rings can expand up to 2.5 sizes without ever needing to be re-sized. And bracelets easily slide on with NO challenging clasps. The precision also affects the look. The streamlined tennis bracelets and bangles fit the more casual attire worn by luxury consumers in the modern world. They can be worn with super tailored blazers, cashmere sweaters, designer denim, classic button up white blouses, print skirts, and more. These stackable rings and bracelets lift your daytime look or add some sparkle to evening attire for date night, special occasions, and charity events.

It is no wonder, then, that the style and the technology have been replicated by other fine jewelry brands. Stackable bracelets have been trending for several seasons, as both couture fashion designers and celebrity stylists use the wrist stack to personalize an overall look. Examples abound from runway seasons throughout the last few years to social media memes of the #saturdaystack and on red carpets alike. This luxury trend has touched every corner of the globe.

While others may offer stretchy bracelets in precious metals, no other brand has the precision technology to set truly exceptional gems into expanding rings and bracelets. See more below about the Xpandable Masterpieces that PICCHIOTTI has created with unheated Pigeon’s Blood rubies and the finest quality Ceylon sapphires or Zambian emeralds. For stretchy or expanding rings and bracelets of the finest quality and with the most valuable gems, PICCHIOTTI is the first and only source.

Design Evolution Continues – From the Beginning to Now and Beyond

The groundbreaking, invisible PICCHIOTTI Xpandable technology has proven to be one of the GREATEST inventions in all of jewelry history… According to Maria Carola Picchiotti, daughter of Giuseppe and marketing director for PICCHIOTTI, the design team in Valenza has evolved the look over time. “We started with 10 or 15 iconic styles of eternity bands and tennis bracelets, but they sold so quickly, we knew we had to make more. And fast! Using complex architectural inspirations, our Italian design team highlights color, form, and function – the hallmarks of genuine luxury design. Over the years, we have regularly launched new styles. We now have over 400 Xpandable designs.”

The Xpandable rings vary in style and type. Originally, exquisite eternity bands offered variety in single, double, and triple row versions, as well as in varieties of diamond shapes, from the round to the emerald-cut or combinations of cuts. The ring assortment now also encompasses engagement rings, as well as ever more bold and unique cocktail rings, those with extraordinary center gems in a variety of shapes – from baguettes and octagonal cuts to the hexagon, oval, pear, and even three-stone styles. Fashionable stackable rings or pinky and thumb rings also allow for non-bridal wear – including precious gemstones like ruby, emerald, and sapphire, or more opaque gems like mother-of-pearl, onyx, coral, and turquoise. The newest rings feature twin baguette diamonds at center with colorful gem halos or styles with three-dimensional height, following PICCHIOTTI’s fondness for architectural design inspiration. An added benefit of the Xpandable technology is that these rings can also be worn on different fingers on different days.

In the bracelet category, original styles of classic tennis bracelets have evolved to now include two and three row styles, as well as fashion-forward styles with opaque gems and/or Gold Accent styles that wear more like stackable bangle bracelets given their gold framing. In celebration of the 5th anniversary of the international Xpandable Patent, Mr. Picchiotti challenged the design team to think outside the box, experimenting with ever more interesting materials. The fifth anniversary is historically associated with the gift of wood, so PICCHIOTTI created a special edition Snakewood Xpandable bracelet featuring 18K rose and white gold with diamonds with strips of precisely re-cut naturally shaded snakewood, some strips appearing lighter and some darker. The open link style chain easily expands and contracts to fit over the hand with no need for a clasp. The use of such creative materials continues to impact the design evolution, with the newest bracelet editions featuring colorful gem ceramic in Art Deco inspired styles and more streamlined looks. Wider Xpandable bracelets offer the appeal of a more significant cuff bracelet, and two-tone metal options are perfect for those wanting to pair their bracelets with luxury watches.

Another exciting chapter in the Xpandable design evolution began in 2024 with the introduction of the patent-pending Xpandable Reversible collection. Not only do these rings and bracelets expand and contract; they also offer the added value of versatility. Each reversible design easily flips over to reveal a completely different design. A solid gold bracelet easily goes from day to nightwear with the gentle twist to reveal and all-diamond surface. Or a turquoise and diamond accent bracelet flips over to reveal an all-white gem ceramic style. Xpandable reversible rings also offer such versatility, flipping from gold to mother-of-pearl and diamond or from brightly colored coral to the solid white.  The reversible appeal is so popular, it has now extended to two-sided drop earrings and reversible necklaces and pendants, as well.

The design evolution will, of course, continue as long as the demand for Xpandable bracelets remains strong. Maria Carola believes that the design is at the heart of this technology’s success, “distinctive design is what makes PICCHIOTTI xpandable easy, comfortable, and beautiful … the true essence of luxury today.”

Stay tuned for exciting Xpandable news next year… 2027 will mark the incredible 60th anniversary of the PICCHIOTTI brand. A mind-blowing Xpandable Masterpiece is in progress that will be released in celebration of the magnificent milestone.

Durable Masterpieces – Technology & Design Made to Last

PICCHIOTTI is world renowned for its extraordinary Masterpieces. Giuseppe Picchiotti has been designing and creating stunning one-of-a-kind jewels for nearly six decades. The introduction the Xpandable collection, as noted above, created a whole new category of luxury. Many of the Xpandable designs are replicable but can only be made in small quantities, given the time-consuming hand craftsmanship involved. While other jewelry brands may attempt similar styles of expanding or stretchy bracelets and rings, only PICCHIOTTI has the technology, precision, and experience to set extremely high value gemstones in Xpandable designs.  Their beloved Masterpieces now incorporate some of the truly special Xpandable designs like the Pigeon’s Blood ruby and diamond bracelet. The “Pigeon’s Blood” ruby is considered the highest quality of ruby, with its deep crimson hue and saturation of color throughout the stone. To set such a high value stone in an Xpandable bracelet, one has to be incredibly sure of the enduring quality of the expanding mechanism. PICCHIOTTI is confident enough to set an entire layout of Pigeon’s Blood rubies in a Masterpiece bracelet that will never need a clasp.

PICCHIOTTI often builds an entire design around a singular superlative gem. Take the unheated vivid pink sapphire from Madagascar in the Xpandable cocktail ring shown above. The natural color of the pink sapphire is extraordinary and very rare. The octagonal cut of the stone allows its depth of color to be fully appreciated, and the design team at PICCHIOTTI framed it with precisely re-cut diamond baguettes atop an Xpandable shank for easy, comfortable wear.

The Impeccably PICCHIOTTI bracelet shown above is another masterpiece set with the Xpandable technology.  Both 18K yellow and white gold are incorporated in this Art Deco inspired design. The channels of baguette diamonds create exceptional sparkle as each individual stone is re-cut with superb precision. The rubies in this bracelet feature an unusual and highly distinctive cut called the buff top. Buff top rubies have a flatter surface plane that really allows the depth of color in the ruby to be appreciated. The hours of artisan workmanship in this bracelet make it a true masterpiece, indeed. And thanks to the invisible PICCHIOTTI Xpandable mechanism, no clasp is required – this bracelet can be worn with the utmost comfort and ease.

Similarly, the Xpandable Gem Ceramic black and white pattern diamond bracelet is a true work of art that also slips on easily. The bracelet features 12 princess cut diamonds weighing in at 16.56 carats, as well as the PICCHIOTTI signature baguette diamonds totaling 5.64 carats. The trompe l’oeil pattern of black gem ceramic and 18K gold is classic and extremely versatile. This is a bracelet that will become a go-to in the jewelry box for a wide variety of occasions, from date night to the board room to the black-tie gala.

Exceptional diamonds are also celebrated in the Xpandable collection. The Hexagon is a new diamond ring with an expandable shank that features a stunning 3.03 ct. hexagonal-cut diamond at center.  The center stone is framed with baguettes creating additional sparkle and the shank is covered with more baguette diamonds. Similarly, the new Xpandable diamond cocktail ring shown above features a heightened center diamond, framed with onyx, baguettes, and rubies for a powerful allure. The Xpandable ring shank echoes the center design with center baguettes again framed by onyx and rubies. Neither of these rings will need any ring sizing. These masterpieces can easily expand up to 2.5 rings sizes to slide gently over knuckles or to grow with the wearer over a lifetime.

The Xpandable collection makes Masterpieces wearable for life. As Giuseppe believes, “at PICCHIOTTI, we are helping women to feel like the Masterpieces that they truly are.”

The PICCHIOTTI Xpandable collection ignited a global revolution, allowing women the ease of no-claps bracelets and rings that do not need to be sized. But all along the way, the PICCHIOTTI family of artisans stayed true to the brand’s well-known reputation for exceptional quality. Maria Carola Picchiotti, the daughter of Giuseppe and the marketing director for the brand, put it best – “When a piece of fine jewelry feels as comfortable as it is beautiful, we know we will wear it forever. It becomes a part of us, an integral expression of who we are. At PICCHIOTTI, that connection between COMFORT and BEAUTY inspired a design revolution… We are making extraordinary treasures that feel comfortable enough to wear every day.”
